Pastor Rev Dr Peter H Carey and Nurse Marion Spranger formed the program 25 years ago and have never taken a fee or a stipend for services. Their experience confirms the existence of many rich and depressed people in the Communities around us, who with some help can become physically, emotionally, and spiritually received.
The Parish Nursing Program builds and strengthens the capacity of individuals, families, and congregations to better understand and care for one another in light of their relationship to God, to faith traditions, and to the broader society. All persons are sacred and must be treated with respect and dignity. In response to this belief, Parish Nursing assists and empowers individuals to become more active partners in the management of their personal health resources, and helps to relieve physical, emotional and spiritual suffering.
The Parish Nursing Program at Wallington Presbyterian Church understands health to be a dynamic process which embodies the spiritual, psychological, physical, and social dimensions of the persons regardless of nationality, race or creed, and for this reason offers this service to all people. Spiritual health is central to wellness which influences a person's entire being. Hence, it is possible for healing to occur without a physical cure. It is our hope that this program will help those in need by making their life more manageable through personal care, compassion, loving kindness, and understanding.
Parish Nursing survives on grants and donations. We are grateful for your support.

Parish Nursing Interfaith & Outreach, Inc. (Wallington, NJ) honors the 2020 recipients of its annual Extraordinary Persons awards, Mark Tomko, Joyce Healy, and Susan Waltman, and recognizes Rev. Dr. Peter Carey for his 40 years of Ministry.
Parish Nursing does not charge for its services, nor do we duplicate services other programs provide. We offer health education, advocacy for our people, referral resources, and spiritual guidance and support. We have responded to a growing need to provide people with "transition care" as the need arises for Nursing Home or Assisted Living. We do home, hospital, nursing home, or rehab visitation.
We practice holistic care. This involves dealing with issues of the mind, spirit, and body. We have found this level of care provides opportunities for growth and healing. Parish Nursing is "interdisciplinary" which means many people (Director, Nurse, Volunteer Coordinator, and Volunteers) collaborate to develop and implement the plan of care.
Anyone can make a referral. An appointment is set up for an assessment of need. The Director, (Rev. Carey) and Nurse, (Marion) make the initial visit to explain the program. We do not duplicate services and we make referrals to other agencies or resources if needed.
South Bergen, Passaic and Clifton. We have done crisis intervention outside of these areas when needed, then referred to area agencies for follow-up.
Parish Nursing survives on grants and donations. In 1999 we became a 501C-3 Non-Profit Incorporation and established a Board of Directors.
