Rev Dr Peter H Carey Jr has been pastor of the WPC for almost 38 years. His ministry and mission has always been to reach out to people in need, whether they are members or non-members of his church. He does not look to change people from their church to his, but when someone is researching for a good church, he is always open to their enquiring about the WPC.
He preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ and he looks to help people see their need for a Christ-centered experience. Reconciliation and forgiveness are major needs in our present-day society. Physical health is an important part of Rev Carey’s ministry. He has been a chaplain for 40 years at the Passaic hospital. He did his doctor of ministry in Hospice Care and a blessed training for his continued involvement for people with chronic illness or those dealing with end-of-life issues. He and nurse Marion Spranger have been doing the Parish Nursing program for over 25 years. This is another great ministry and mission outreach branch of the church.
Pastor Carey says “Our Church is an open church, first teaching commitment to Jesus Christ through making us all members of God’s Kingdom now while we live and move and have our being.” He teaches to the mission “to make disciples of all nations.”
Wallington Presbyterian Church began in 1875 and was called the Wallington Chapel. The members were Dutch and German descent. Later on, the church as it grew joined the Presbyterian Church in the USA. Because of this heritage, the Christ Presbyterian Church of Passaic, which was very heavily German, merged with and joined the Wallington Presbyterian Church around 1945.
The Wallington Presbyterian Church is currently a part of the Presbytery of the Palisades.
The mission of the church must be the mission of God, and this mission of God is in Christ. In Christ, the Church participation in God’s mission for the transformation of Creation and humanity by proclaiming to all people the good news of God’s love, offering to all people the grace of God at front and center, and calling all people to discipleship in Christ. Human beings have no higher goal in life than to glorify and enjoy God now and forever, living in Covenant fellowship with God and participating in God’s mission. Simply said, Jesus said to His disciples “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19-20) This mission of Christ is now the mission of the Wallington Presbyterian Church.
The Ladies’ Guild includes all Ladies of the Church as well as friends who are not members. They contribute financially to the church through yard sales, luncheons, dinners, additional fundraisers, and special events. The Ladies’ Guild has always been a strong contributor to the life of the church and has allowed the church to pay its bills in lean years.
The Board of Deacons is a valuable part of the church’s ministry and mission. Deacons are communicant members who are elected for three years. Their work consists of doing much for special services and who they receive financial support by having certain fundraising events. Their community outreach is very important for the Church.
The session, along with the Board of Deacons, support the pastor physically, spiritually, and financially, creating a strong church. The session are considered ruling elders who follow the Book of Order in ruling the church. Their permission is necessary for all Church-performed activities.
